Air Cadet Flying Preparation and National Training Selection

The 396 City of Prince George Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron offers preparation support for cadets interested in pursuing advanced aviation opportunities through the Air Cadet Gliding and Power Pilot Training Programs. These opportunities are offered at the national level and are part of the Cadet Summer Training Course selection process.

What the Squadron Offers

To support interested cadets, the squadron provides additional instruction and mentoring that aligns with the Air Cadet Online Ground School initiative and national selection expectations. Sessions are designed to help cadets:

  • Navigate and complete the Air Cadet Online Ground School, which provides the theoretical foundation required for flying courses.
  • Review material from official training references such as From the Ground Up and other aviation resources.
  • Answer questions and reinforce understanding of aviation subjects introduced in the online modules.

These preparatory sessions are typically held on Wednesday evenings at the squadron (1900–2130 hours), providing a structured environment for discussion, study, and mock examination practice.

Cadets are encouraged to study online course content independently to strengthen their comprehension in advance of group sessions.

National Qualification and Selection

After completing the ground school content, cadets participate in a Qualifying Examination administered through the Air Cadet Online Ground School platform. Following successful completion, cadets are prepared for participation in the National Selection Board process.

The National Selection Board interviews are typically conducted in February each training year. Candidates reviewed by the Board may be selected for one of the following national courses:

  • Glider Pilot Training Course (GPTC)
  • Power Pilot Training Course (PPTC)

Final selection to these courses is competitive and managed through a formal cadet training selection process overseen by the Cadets and Junior Canadian Rangers Group Headquarters. Eligibility requirements for these national courses are established by CJCR Gp policy and may include criteria such as age, academic standing, physical requirements, and successful completion of defined training objectives within your local squadron and the online program.

Why This Matters

Completing ground school and preparing for national selection boards provides cadets with:

  • A solid foundation in aviation theory
  • Improved readiness for advanced training opportunities
  • Experience with structured learning and professional evaluation
  • Greater confidence entering competitive selection processes

Participation in ground school does not guarantee a national course assignment, but it significantly enhances a cadet’s preparation and competitiveness.
